8BitDo Goes Green: Xbox-Themed Retro Keyboard Boasts RGB Backlighting
Nostalgia meets modern tech in 8BitDo’s latest offering – the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. This eye-catching keyboard pays homage to the original Xbox’s iconic translucent green design, with matching keycaps and a splash of RGB backlighting, marking the first time 8BitDo has integrated multicolor lighting into their mechanical keyboard lineup.
A Blast From the Past Meets Modern Features
Releasing on January 16th, 2025, the Xbox Edition keyboard is currently available for preorder on Amazon for $119.99. 8BitDo also announced a matching Retro R8 Mouse, complete with a translucent green shell and customizable buttons mirroring the classic Xbox controller layout.
The Retro 87 keyboard features a tenkeyless layout for a streamlined setup, sporting 87 keys, including a dedicated Xbox logo button for quick access to the Windows Game Bar. 8BitDo’s signature double-layered ABS keycaps with a matte UV coating ensure durability and a stylish feel, combined with Kailh Jellyfish X switches for a responsive and satisfying typing experience.
But perhaps the most notable addition is the RGB backlighting. With eight distinct modes, from undulating rainbow waves to single-key illumination, users can personalize the keyboard’s aesthetics to match their gaming setup.
The keyboard also packs a punch in terms of functionality. It boasts a 2,000mAh battery promising up to 200 hours of use, though 8BitDo hasn’t confirmed if this is with backlight on or connection method. While wireless connectivity is possible through both Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz dongle, the keyboard also includes a USB-C cable for wired connections in case of power depletion. Customization takes center stage with 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2, enabling key remapping and macro creation. Don’t forget the iconic Dual Super Buttons for quick access to macros or functions, a hallmark feature of 8BitDo’s mechanical keyboards.
Retro Mouse Completes the Set
The matching 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition features a sleek transparent green design. Equipped with four programmable side buttons, this mouse channels the aesthetic of the original Xbox controller and delivers high performance with its PAW 3395 optical sensor boasting six selectable DPI levels ranging from 50 DPI to 26,000 DPI.
Gaming responsiveness is further enhanced with an adjustable polling rate, ranging from 125Hz to 8,000Hz. Kailh Sword GM X micro-switches on the primary buttons boast a 100 million click lifespan, promising durability and longevity.
Similar to the keyboard, the mouse offers impressive battery life. Charging via a matching wireless charging dock, the mouse can last up to 100 hours on Bluetooth or 26 to 105 hours with the 2.4GHz dongle depending on polling rate.
A Nostalgic Nod for Gamers and Enthusiasts
The 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition and Retro R8 Mouse are more than just peripherals. They’re a captivating blend of nostalgia and modern technology, meticulously crafted to appeal to both hardcore gamers and tech aficionados who appreciate a touch of retro charm.
This move by 8BitDo highlights the growing trend of retro-themed tech, reclaiming iconic designs and infusing them with modern features. As companies like 8BitDo continue to innovate and pay homage to classic gaming hardware, it raises the question: What other beloved gaming consoles or peripherals might get a similar revival in the future?
