- 850 people at a commemoration ceremony for the Ukraine war.
- Big rally on Bremen market square.
- Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte thanks for solidarity.
A commemoration event was also held in downtown Bremen on the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the police, around 850 people took part in the market square.
Also present were the President of the Bremen Parliament, Frank Imhoff (CDU), and Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD). Both politicians once again condemned the war in the strongest possible terms. They said in their speeches that people were appalled by the violence and brutality of the war.
Bovenschulte called on the people of Bremen to continue helping Ukraine and thanked them for the support they had already given.
We are a cosmopolitan city. We welcome people with open arms to help them and without reservations. It will be the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Andreas Bovenschulte, Lord Mayor of Bremen
Supporters’ initiatives, trade unions and parties had called for the memorial rally. There were similar events in Lower Saxony – for example in Hanover and Lingen. In addition, thousands of people with a 50-kilometer human chain between Osnabrück and Münster commemorated the beginning of the war a year ago.
Façade of the Bremen Parliament is illuminated
As a sign of solidarity, the facade of the Bremen Parliament has been illuminated in the Ukrainian national colors yellow and blue since the early hours of the morning on Friday. There were also peace prayers in some churches in Bremen and Bremerhaven, including Bremen’s St. Peter’s Cathedral and Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Bremerhaven-Lehe.
In Achim, too, the city council, the city administration and Ukrainian families invited people to take a walk together.
