84-Year-Old Manhattan Retired Teacher Found Strangled in Upper West Side Apartment Declared Victim of Elder Abuse Homicide – No Arrests Made

Ana Asencio, an 84-year-old retired teacher who was found dead in her apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side (NYC), was a victim of elder abuse.

Asencio died in the summer of last year and now the case was declared homicide by strangulation, The New York police reported yesterday. No one has been arrested nor have any suspects been announced.

“She didn’t deserve this.”

Migdalia Rodríguez – Neighbor of the victim

Police found Asencio after receiving a call from a concerned family member who asked officers to come check on her. NYPD officers found her dead face up in the bedroom of her apartment on W. 93rd St. near Columbus Ave. around 9:55 p.m. on July 17, she recalled. Daily News.

The City Medical Examiner’s Office (OCME) recently classified the death as a homicide and told the NYPD that Asencio was strangled. She had bruises on the neck and head trauma.

Attorneys from the Manhattan district attorney’s office visited the building, where they showed neighbors photographs of Ascencio’s injuries, according to a resident.

“She didn’t deserve this,” said Migdalia Rodríguez, a 72-year-old neighbor. “She wasn’t in her right mind, but she was a lovely lady.”

Ascencio was a retired public school teacher who suffered from dementia and shared a dirty apartment with her son, according to the neighbor. ““Her son lives here but she was really alone,” Rodriguez said. “I knocked on the door from time to time to see if he was okay.”

Rodríguez and her mother brought Ascencio food and helped her go to the bathroom. “Her legs were swollen and she needed help to move,” the neighbor added. “The apartment was always a disaster.”

Ascencio’s son has not commented on the death after the homicide was declared. In a similar case, also last year on the Upper West Side, a 74-year-old Dominican great-grandmother died after being strangled and sexually abused in her apartment.
