84% of young farmers in Castilla y León take out agricultural insurance

Know the concerns, expectations, concerns and needs of young people in the rural environment of Castilla y León. This has been the objective of the survey carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Affairs of 1,267 young people who carry out the activity in the Community, which have revealed the importance of hiring agricultural insurance, OPAs and training through new technologies applied to the sector.

The sample reveals that 84% of young farmers in Castilla y León hire a agricultural insurance that guarantees the investment made in their farms in the event of bad weather conditions or unforeseen events of other kinds. Of these, 75% of young people hire it regularly, while 9% do it occasionally. Only 16% of farmers and ranchers in the Community do not hire this service.

Regarding training, those interviewed revealed that 76% of them consider themselves trained to be able to carry out the activity in an optimal and profitable way. Despite this, they pose as necessary training subjects in other areas to complement your activity with new knowledge about new technologies applied to the agricultural sector, animal welfare, soil management and fertilization, environmental techniques in agriculture and livestock, precision agriculture, business management or organic production, biodynamics …

Another of the data revealed by this sample is that 82% of young people prefer that their facilities are individually. In addition, 34% of the way to commercialize production is through sale to stockists or cattle dealers / entrants, 29% through the cooperative or associative entity, 18% V through direct sales In the exploitation, 10% falls to the processing industry and the remaining 9% allocates its products to integrative part, local market or online sale.

Lastly, young people from Castilla y León state that 72% have received grants from the AGDR Council to make its exploitation viable. And he thanks the entities for their management, since 94% make requests for help through an entity of this type.

PROFESSIONAL AND COOPERATIVE ORGANIZATIONS

The agricultural professional organizations of Castilla y León bring together 65% of the young farmers in the region. Regarding cooperatives and other entities such as Agrarian Transformation Societies or Organizations of Fruit and Vegetable Producers, 34% of young farmers interviewed is part of some. In addition, 50% of them participate or would be willing to be part of the management bodies because 92% consider that being a partner has advantages.

Within this section, the respondents consider that the main challenges and objectives that takeover bids must pursue are the defense of the interests of the agricultural sector; he agricultural and livestock advice; the management of administrative procedures and aid; dialogue with the administration and other sectors of society; and agricultural and livestock training. On the contrary, the least valued challenges have been the contribution to the dignity of the agricultural and livestock sector before society, and the technical and economic services of the farm.

DIFFICULTIES TO WORK IN THE SECTOR

This survey has also revealed what difficulties young people in Castilla y León face in accessing the labor market in the agricultural and livestock sector. Among them, the profitability of the activity, access to financing, availability of land and / or pastures, family responsibilities, the complexity of the administrative transactions, the recognition of the agricultural activity and the necessary knowledge for the implantation of their exploitations.

PROFILE OF RESPONDENTS

Among the 1,267 respondents, it stands out that 63% are men and 37% women. The average age of the interviewees is around 29.4 years and 78% of them reside in a municipality in the Community with less than 5,000 inhabitants.

In addition, the employment situation of the 72% of young people were employed, 13% unemployed and 15% students. It is important to highlight that among those surveyed, the fact that 84% have some family link with agriculture or livestock stands out and 80% would like to dedicate themselves to the activity in rural areas. Of these, 70% would like to do it full time, while the remaining 30% would be willing to make it compatible with other activities.

It is important to highlight that 79% of the young people surveyed use social networks, assessing their positive contribution to: help improve the image of the agricultural sector, know the agricultural sector, its contribution to a healthy and healthy diet and the preservation of the rural environment, contribute to inform the sector about subsidies and subsidies and regulatory developments, disseminate information of general agri-food interest, promote exchange and connection between producers with similar interests, and learn about the opinion of society on agriculture and livestock.

BALANCE SURVEY

This survey has been carried out thanks to the collaboration of agricultural organizations, the Regional Union of Cooperatives of Castilla y León, the Youth Council of Castilla y León and the Integrated Training Centers (Agricultural and agri-food professional).
