Since the onset of the corona pandemic, some 83,000 violations of the mask requirement have been counted in Hamburg local transport. This was announced by the Hamburger Verkehrsbund (HVV).
In the current year, there have been nearly 36,000 mask-making violations on buses and trains. According to the HVV, that’s about 11,300 more violations than last year. One possible reason is the growing number of passengers, which is moving towards the pre-coronavirus level.
40 euro penalty for violation of the mask requirement
From April 2020 it is mandatory to wear a mask on buses and trains in Hamburg and from the beginning of this year it has to be an FFP2 mask. According to the Hamburger Hochbahn, anyone caught without it must pay a fine of 40 euros and – if they don’t have a mask with them – cannot continue driving.

The checks take place continuously in connection with the ticket check. Bus and train drivers are expected to react to violations in a de-escalated manner, Hochbahn spokesman Christoph Kreienbaum told the dpa news agency. In addition to the standard announcements, drivers could also independently use a microphone to signal the obligation to wear a mask. However, they are not responsible for the execution of the obligation, for this it is necessary to consult the elevated railway guard.
Hochbahn: It is becoming increasingly difficult to enforce the mask requirement
“However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to enforce the obligation of FFP2. Precisely because the example of Lufthansa has caused a sensation,” said Kreienbaum. The Berlin traffic light coalition is in favor of temporarily ending the mandatory crown mask on airplanes in the fall. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) had justified the planned temporary lifting of the crown mask requirement in airplanes, but still adheres to it for buses and trains.
