Animals that transmit rabies include cats, monkeys, and dogs.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MUKOMUKO – The health office of Mukomuko Regency, Bengkulu province, managed 83 residents who were bitten by rabies-carrying animals. The animals in question include types of cats, monkeys, and dogs. The case occurred from January to October 2022.
“All residents who were bitten by the rabies-transmitting animal received the rabies vaccine (VAR) to prevent rabies,” said Mukomuko District Health Bureau Anti-Rabies Program Manager Bara Lendra in Mukomuko. Tuesday (8/11/2022).
Of the 83 residents who were bitten by the rabies animal, 57 were bitten by dogs, 21 by cats and five by monkeys. He said they got the VAR for free but had to complete the requirements in the form of a certificate from the village head known to the sub-district head and a reference letter from the local puskesmas.
He ensured that the VAR was still safe and sufficient for 47 patients who were bitten by rabid animals in the coming months. “The stock of VAR in this service is still safe, which is 56 kiur. However, there are nine other cases of rabid animal bites as of mid-September 2022, so there are 47 kiurs left,” she said.
His party in August 2022 received another 50 rabies vaccines (VARs) from the provincial government for 50 patients bitten by a rabies-transmitting animal. This year the Local Health Authority will purchase a rabies vaccine to prevent people bitten by the animal from contracting rabies.
“Currently the local government is buying VAR but we cannot confirm the quantity of the vaccine, what is certain is that the vaccine is used to treat people who are bitten by animals that transmit rabies,” he said.
