AMBON, Siwalimanews – The Ambon City Health Office noted that during 2021 it was found that 81 people were infected with cases Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) day Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and six of them have died.
“Of the 81 cases, 65 of them were HIV cases and 16 people were infected with AIDS cases. The total is 81 cases. And from the 81 cases, six people have been declared dead,” said the Head of Ambon City Health Office, Wendy Pelupessy Siwalima, Monday (6/12).
Pelupessy said, the 81 cases experienced a decrease when compared to 2020, which reached 149 cases of HIV and AIDS, 24 cases, bringing a total of 174 cases.
“When compared to 2020, the number of cases this year has decreased. Because, last year there were 149 HIV cases, while AIDS cases were 24. So the total is 174 cases,” said Pelupessy.
Pelupessy explained that the case of HIV-AIDS is like an iceberg phenomenon. Because when someone is infected, there is still a lot that is hidden.

“The case of HIV/AIDS is like an iceberg phenomenon. When there are cases that are obtained, there are still many that are hidden,” he said.
The Ambon City Health Service, continued Pelupessy, gave medicine when a patient was found to be infected with HIV, so that they would not fall into the AIDS virus.
“When caught early and treated HIV patients do not fall into AIDS,” he said.
The former head of the Rijali Community Health Center, Ambon City, appealed to the public to be able to check their health to find out whether there is HIV-AIDS or not. This is for the common good.
“People are encouraged to be able to check their health early to find out their health status. Hopefully the stigmatization of PLWHA can also be minimized,” he said. (S-52)
