8000 students in North Rhine-Westphalia received the Deutschlandstipendium in 2020

A total of 7793 students in North Rhine-Westphalia received a Germany Scholarship in 2020. That was 2.7 percent or 216 students less than a year earlier, as the State Statistical Office announced on Monday. The majority of these – a total of 4,763 scholarships – went to university students. Another 2,659 beneficiaries attended a university of applied sciences. 371 scholarships were given to students at theological colleges and art colleges.

The Deutschlandstipendium was introduced in 2011 to support students and newcomers whose careers can be expected to achieve outstanding results in their studies and at work. Social commitment and personal circumstances are also among the funding criteria. The income-independent funding of 300 euros per month is paid half by public funds from the federal government and half by private sponsors. The universities are responsible for raising private funds. In 2020, the universities received a total of 8.70 million euros from 1,861 private donors.
