8,000 ravers take part in ‘free party’ on runway in Brittany

illegal party

More than 8,000 people attended a rave in the western French region of Brittany on Saturday evening, according to a count by authorities. The party will take place, despite a ban, on the grounds of an airport near the city of Quimper, the prefecture of the Finistère department reports.

From 4 a.m. Saturday morning, revelers descended on Pluguffan Airport near Quimper. There have been no commercial activities since November. “The first group broke open the entrance to the airport and almost ran over a gendarmerie vehicle,” Alain Espinasse, prefect of Finistère, told the French news agency AFP.

Trucks and vehicles from France and Belgium were parked next to tents and ravers on the airport runway, according to an eyewitness. Despite the seizure of equipment from several trucks on the night of Friday to Saturday, there were ten to twelve stages with sound walls spread across the airport grounds.

Following reports on social media, the prefects of the four Brittany departments this week issued a ban on undeclared festive gatherings over the Easter weekend. On Saturday, the prefecture announced its intention to deploy a mobile unit, although it ruled out an evacuation operation. The local government found the intervention “quite risky” for safety. The emergency services are on site.
