80 Fatalities Reported in France’s Summer Heat Wave

The heat wave that hit France this summer claimed its first victims. According to the latest figures published by Public health France Wednesday August 2, at least 80 people lost their lives “in exceptional circumstances” during the first summer period of high heat, which took place between July 7 and 13.

This heat wave affected 21 departments of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, as well as Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand-Est, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica, i.e. around 20% of the population of Metropolitan France. Temperatures reached more than 38°C in some cities, and the heat wave lasted between 3 and 6 days depending on the department.

It should also be noted that two fatal work accidents, possibly linked to high temperatures, were reported by the General Labor Directorate. These tragedies took place in two regions affected by the heat wave, namely Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Grand-Est. In a context of climate change, Public Health France reminds us that heat remains a health hazard.

The hottest month of June in France since 1900

In addition to this first period of summer heatwave, the French were faced with high temperatures from the beginning of June, making it the second hottest month of June since 1900. The northern regions were particularly affected , while stormy episodes followed one another in the south. However, as Public Health France indicates, this estimate is only provisional. It does not fully reflect the impact of the heat wave on the health of the French. A consolidated report, including the number of deaths linked to high temperatures, will be communicated at the end of the summer.

Globally, the average temperatures recorded in early June were the highest ever recorded for this period, according to the European service Copernicus. Public Health France therefore emphasizes the need to put in place “management and prevention measures aimed at reducing the impact of heat on populations”.
