The 80 euro petrol bonus – the amount circulated by the most recent rumors – will be aimed at families who have a particularly low income. The Meloni government is reportedly considering the possibility of distributing the bonus only to those who have already had the ‘Dedicated to you’ shopping card.
Gasoline prices are at their highest levels in over a year. The Meloni government continues to study an intervention that will improve the situation for families in difficulty and at the same time not weigh too heavily on public budgets. The idea is that of a petrol bonus, which will follow the model of the ‘Dedicated to you’ shopping card: a limited sum, aimed only at those who meet stringent ISEE requirements. At least until the end of September, however, the measure will probably remain pending waiting for the Nadef (Update note to the Economic and Financial Document) which clarifies Italy’s economic situation and the resources available for the next maneuver.
Il price of petrol it is the highest since 15 July 2022, when the excise duty cut was in force: today the cost on the motorway is 2.076 euros per litre, while in the various regions (off the motorway) it ranges from 1.981 euros in Veneto to 2,033 of Liguria. In fifteen out of twenty regions, the price has exceeded two euros per litre, and we are talking about self-service, not served. However, this is a level still far from that which in 2022 had led to the excise duty cut by around 30 cents: then, the average was between 2.2 and 2.3 euros per litre.
Il diesel is in a similar situation, with the highest price since the beginning of 2023. In half of the Regions the price is between 1.93 and 1.94 euros per litre, with the peak at 1.974 euros in the Province of Bolzano. On the motorway today it costs 2,019 euros per litre.
The government’s plan to stop high fuel prices: no cut in excise duties, but the bonus is coming
Thus, even if the government has now made it clear that it does not intend to consider a new cut in excise duties between now and the end of the year, the request for help is becoming increasingly pressing. The executive’s intention is declared: to provide a new petrol bonus, of limited duration and only for a limited part of the population. The model will be that of the grocery shopping card, the 382.50 euro social food card distributed to families with a ISEE under 15 thousand euros and in which no member received other forms of support (RDC, Naspi, redundancy fund…).
The protection will therefore be aimed at those who have a “more fragile economic situation”, as clarified by the Minister of Business Adolfo Urso. The quickest solution for the government could be to distribute the bonus only to who has already obtained the shopping card for food products: an additional accreditation would be sufficient, without further rankings.
The amount of the bonus, for the moment, is to be established. The hypothesis circulated is that the subsidy could be of 80 euro: definitely less than the 150 euros initially talked about. This figure would bring the expenditure to around 100 million euros for the measure, in a month. The money in question could only be used for the purchase of fuel, just as previously the 382.50 euros could only be used for some basic food products.
