’80 domestic cases’ mutant virus… Will the cure work?

Efficacy evaluation of COVID-19 treatment at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases

[아시아경제 김지희 기자] As of 0:00 on the 11th, 80 cases of Corona 19 mutant virus were confirmed in Korea. In particular, as concerns about the spread of the mutant virus have increased as cases of spreading to local communities have recently been confirmed, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases announced the results of the efficacy evaluation of the Corona 19 antibody treatment in this regard.

In this analysis, Celltrion’s Corona 19 antibody treatment’Rekironaju’ showed excellent neutralizing ability (viral neutralization ability) against 6 existing mutant viruses and the UK mutant. On the other hand, it was found that the neutralizing ability decreased significantly for the South African mutation. Remdesivir, which is already being used as a treatment, has an inhibitory effect on both the existing mutant virus and the UK and South African mutant viruses.

Rekirona State, South Africa’s powerless to mutate… “Recommended to restrict use for the confirmed person”

Rekkirona, which received conditional approval for phase 3 clinical trials from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety on the 5th, was confirmed to have excellent neutralizing ability in six types of existing mutant viruses, S·L·V·G·GH·GR. Similar results were found for the British mutant virus. However, the efficacy was very low against the South African mutant virus. Of the 80 mutant viruses identified in Korea so far, the UK mutation is the largest with 64, followed by South Africa with 10 and Brazil with 6.

Jun-wook Kwon, head of the 2nd Division of the Central Defense Countermeasures Headquarters, said, “If you look at some overseas papers, there is a corona 19 virus spike protein called’E484K’ in South African and Brazilian mutants. Also, the efficacy was very low,” he said, “a situation that was predicted to some extent.” He added, “For the South African mutant stocks, virtually the neutralization ability was hardly found in numerical terms,” he added.

Rekirona is currently undergoing further analysis at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), organized by Celltrion. After that, a comprehensive analysis through animal experiments will also be conducted.

First, the authorities have decided to recommend restricting the use of Rekirona to confirmed cases of the South African mutant virus. However, even in the case of a confirmed case from a mutant virus epidemic area in South Africa, it plans to supply Rekirona if requested by a medical staff before checking for a mutant virus infection.

‘Over 4000 doses’ Remdesivir “catches both British and South African mutations”

On the other hand, it was analyzed that Gilead Science’s Remdesivir, which has been officially approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, is being used as a treatment for Corona 19, which is also effective in mutations in South Africa. It can catch all of the existing mutant viruses S, GH, and GR, as well as British mutants.

According to the Central Defense Agency, Remdesivir was supplied to 119 hospitals and 4313 patients as of 0 o’clock on the 11th.

Deputy General Manager Kwon said, “The National Institute of Infectious Diseases has secured a wide range of antibody substances that have an inhibitory effect on mutant viruses in the UK and South Africa through public-private cooperation, and is developing therapeutic agents that can minimize the effects of mutations. We will continue to carry out monitoring of mutant viruses and analysis of therapeutic efficacy.”
