A 24-year-old man from Domburg has been sentenced on appeal to eight years in prison for shaking to death his four-month-old son. That is two years more than the sentence that the court previously imposed on him and the demand of the Public Prosecution Service.
According to the court, it has been proven that the man mistreated his baby in such a way that the child suffered brain damage and died a few days later. According to the judge, a prison sentence of six years is not high enough. Especially with his father the child should have been safe.
The man has always denied that he abused his son. Also during this session he denied, writes Zeeland broadcaster. “I maintain my innocence, I have been wrongly convicted,” he said. The man did acknowledge that he can sometimes react uninhibitedly. Research showed that he suffers from borderline and has anti-social and narcissistic traits.
The court ruling comes nearly five years after the baby died. The lawsuit was delayed because the defense wanted more investigation into the nature of the child’s injuries.
