8-Year-Old Ukrainian Boy Survives Russian Missile Attack and Returns to School and Dancing After Dozens of Operations

8-year-old Roman Oleksiv survived the Russian army’s missile attack on Vinnytsia in the summer of 2022. After a year of rehabilitation and dozens of operations, Roman returned to the Lviv school and began to engage in ballroom dancing and music again.

Roman Oleksiv is immediately recognizable among the children in the corridors of the Lviv school, because he wears a blue mask and special gloves on his hands due to the burns he received in the impact of a Russian army missile. After injuries and severe periods of treatment, Roman returned to his native school and resumed dance lessons, according to Reuters.

Roman came to the doctor with his mother when the Russian army’s cruise missile hit the Vinnytsia Central Hospital. It happened in July 2022 and became one of the deadliest Russian missile attacks on civilians since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. As a result of this attack, 28 Ukrainian civilians were killed. Among them was Roman’s mother, and Roman himself suffered severe head wounds, a broken arm, a leg injury and burns over 45% of his body.

After doctors in Lviv stabilized his condition, he was sent to a burn unit in Dresden, Germany, where he spent almost a year. Roman underwent more than 30 operations there.

He is now back in Lviv, and although he has to return to Dresden regularly for treatment, Roman has begun to return to everyday life with the help of his father Yaroslav. “We didn’t know if he would be able to walk, move his arm or his fingers,” Yaroslav told Reuters. He also explained that his son is not yet in a condition to speak to the media.

“But thanks to the work of doctors, Roman’s work, superhuman efforts… All this opened the door for him to return to dancing, to musical instruments,” the father does not hide his pride for his son.

Roman has many more operations ahead of him. He has to wear bandages for about a year. Doctors will then be able to start polishing the scars on the skin.
