8-year-old shoots himself in the head in the Bronx | Univision 41 New York WXTV

The incident occurred in a building located at 5 Fordham Hill Oval, in the Fordham Manor sector of the Bronx, around 12:30 pm Monday, police said.

Authorities say the boy discovered his father’s gun in the closet and accidentally shot himself in the head. The gun was kept in a safe in the closet, but it was not locked.

Councilor Fernando Cabrera reportedly lives across the street and was at the scene. He confirmed that the boy’s self-inflicted gunshot wound was accidental and did not penetrate the boy’s skull.

The little boy was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to reports.

Authorities initially believed that the weapon was not registered, but the councilor confirmed that this is not the case.

Police are questioning the 43-year-old father at station 52.

The shooting remains under investigation.
