8-Year-Old Boy Survives Rare Puma Attack in Washington’s Olympic National Park

Washington

An 8 year old boy survived with minor injuries attack of a wild puma in the Olympic National Park in Washington, United States of America (US). Puma attacks on humans are extremely rare.

As reported CNN, Monday (31/7/2023), the incident occurred while the boy was camping with his mother in Lake Angeles, near the Heat O’ the Hills area south of Port Angeles. Suddenly a puma attacked the boy

A statement released by the US National Park Service said the puma “casually stopped its attack after being screamed at by the child’s mother”. The national park management authority was notified of the puma attack on Saturday (29/7) evening and responded immediately.

The boy suffered “minor injuries” in the attack and was rushed to hospital for further examination.

After the puma attack, the national park management staff evacuated everyone who had camped in the area around Lake Angeles and closed the area until further notice.

“Due to the extreme nature of this incident, we are closing the Lake Angeles area and some of the surrounding trails,” Olympic National Park wildlife biologist Tom Kay said in a statement.

A team of law enforcement at the national park and wildlife officers specializing in tracking cougars were dispatched to the site of the giant cat’s last sighting. If the team finds the puma, they will euthanize it and perform a necropsy.

“This may provide a clue as to why the animal attacked as cougars are rarely seen and attacks on humans are extremely rare,” the park’s management authority said.
