8-Year-Old Boy Injured in Shooting on Interstate 580 in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. – In a shocking incident on Friday evening, an 8-year-old boy was injured in a shooting on Interstate 580 in Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The CHP reported that at approximately 6:23 p.m., officers responded to eastbound I-580 near Grand Avenue after receiving a report of two vehicles shooting at each other. Tragically, the young boy, who was riding in an unrelated vehicle, was struck by gunfire.
The boy was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment. As of now, there is no update on his condition.
CHP officers are currently investigating the incident, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
Due to the ongoing investigation, all eastbound lanes on I-580 near Harrison are currently closed.
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao expressed her deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is a horrific tragedy. As a mother, my heart breaks for the young victim and the victim’s family. Senseless gun violence has impacted far too many lives, and when an innocent child is harmed, it is unfathomable. I am staying abreast of the situation and join all Oaklanders in pulling for the young victim’s full recovery. I will continue to prioritize community safety so that all children can grow and thrive. Our OPD officers will be working with CHP to do everything we can to apprehend those who are responsible for this senseless act and hold them accountable.”
