Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) will be closed for eight weeks from Monday. During that time, the runway is being renovated. This is necessary because of wear of the asphalt. As a result, small particles can detach and cause damage to aircraft.
The closure will last until June 30. MAA’s track is 2750 meters long and 45 meters wide. A renovation like this is a major job, according to the airport.
Contractor Dura Vermeer is resurfacing more than 71,000 tons of asphalt. In addition, about a thousand lighting fixtures will be replaced, about 15 kilometers of lines will be installed and about 100 kilometers of cabling will be required.
On the busiest days, around 250 people are at work. Shareholder province of Limburg reserved 35 million euros for the renovation. According to the airport, Dura Vermeer’s contract price is around 22 million euros, apart from additional costs such as plan preparation, project management and supervision.
The increase in nitrogen emissions from all this work is fully offset, according to MAA, because there are no planes for eight weeks.
