8 Ways to Protect Your Smartphone Battery and Extend its Lifespan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Every smartphone may have a built-in security mechanism to protect the battery. However, taking a careful approach will make it last longer. Here are some ways to protect battery cellphone distributed by Ritesh Chugh, associate professor at CQUniversity Australia, quoted from the page ABC News, Tuesday (10/10/2023).

1. Install the latest software

Don’t ignore notifications on your phone that remind you to install the latest software updates. Keeping the software up to date is important, so that the phone is always up to date with battery efficiency improvements from the manufacturer.

2. Use original charger

Always use the original charger that came with it when purchasing a cell phone, as the power delivery (amps, volts and watts) of off-the-shelf chargers may vary and may not meet the required safety standards. If you do buy a new one, make sure the charger is certified.

3. Avoid exposing your cellphone to high temperatures

Exposure to high temperatures can damage the battery, including decreasing its lifespan and even making some cellphone functions not work properly. Apple and Samsung say their cellphones function best at temperatures around zero to 35 degrees Celsius.

4. Limit charging

There is a special trick when charging, namely limiting the maximum percentage to only charging 80 percent of full capacity. Apart from that, the lower limit percentage also needs to be considered. Do not let cell phone battery fell to below 20 percent.

5. Don’t charge for too long

Charging the cellphone for a long time is not recommended. It’s best not to leave the phone connected to the charging cable overnight because the battery could be affected. Always disconnect from the power source if the battery percentage is sufficient.

6. Store the phone in a ventilated place

Air exchange in the cellphone storage area is very necessary, especially make sure to charge the cellphone in a well-ventilated area. Avoid placing your phone or its charger under a blanket, pillow, or body while it is connected to a power source.

7. Monitor the “health” of the battery

There is no harm in monitoring the “health” of the battery periodically. That is, check the battery usage and see whether it is excessive or not. Also identify if there is anything unusual, such as charging taking too long, or the battery draining quickly for no reason.

8. Check immediately if there is a problem

Contact an authorized service center to check and repair your phone if you notice any problems. For example, the phone temperature becomes too hot, or the back bulges out. Ask for specific details about the condition of the phone and battery.
