When you dream of a city trip to the United States, it’s normal to first have the teeming New York in mind. Historically, economically and culturally, the Big Apple has become an obvious choice for a first stay across the Atlantic. However, it would be a shame not to think about other major cities in the United States. If you don’t want to go to Los Angeles, which has no shortage of good addresses, consider Chicago! The largest city in the Midwest was voted, in September, and for the seventh consecutive time, “best large city in the United States” by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler.
Since its rise in the 19the century, the metropolis has experienced numerous upheavals and seen History being built before it. Skyscrapers were born in Chicago in the 1880s, after the city was destroyed by fire. Until 1998, the Willis Tower was the tallest in the world. But at the beginning XXe century, the city’s popularity was at an all-time low, being nicknamed the capital of organized crime, due to the reign of Al Capone. In the midst of Prohibition, Chicago also became one of the cradles of jazz, just like New Orleans. “Windy city” (one of its nicknames, because, as you will see, the wind is omnipresent), developed around 77 neighborhoods, benefits from a culinary offering typical of Illinois and unmissable cultural events (in more of the popularity reinforced under the presidency of Barack Obama, who cut his teeth in Chicago).
On going there, the observation is striking. The city breathes thanks to the omnipresence of water. Its main streets, as impressive as those of New York, seem less stuffy. A setting that makes you want to stroll around and discover the city’s essentials. To get from one point to another, jump on the skytrain, called the Union Loop, which crosses the central district of the same name, seen in “The Matrix” and in the series “The Bear”.
