Apart from action and horror, sci-fi films also have a lot of fans. Indeed, the number of sci-fi films is not as much as action films which always appear every month. 1. The Martian
The Martian is adapted from a novel by Andy Weir with the same title. The film tells about the journey of astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) who is stranded on Mars after being hit by a violent storm. He uses his scientific expertise and determination to survive while waiting for a rescue attempt by the people of Earth.
One of the accuracy in this film is the time travel between Earth and Mars, which would take eight grueling months. Another noteworthy accuracy is that it is indeed possible to grow crops using Martian soil. In addition, the strong winds seen throughout the film also correspond to the surface of Mars, and although the film also adds other things for added entertainment, the depiction is accurate.
2. Interstellar
The second Sci-Fi film that proved accurate was Interstellar. Interstellar is probably one of the best sci-fi films, especially since the film was directed by Christopher Nolan. This film tells of a former NASA pilot named Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who is called to help the research team. They are trying to find other habitable planets through wormholes. The film received critical acclaim for its portrayal of the black hole “Gargantua,” which is considered one of the most accurate depictions of a black hole in film.
Another acuity in the film is that the approaching gravity of a large object can make time move more slowly than it would for a human on Earth. This becomes clear when Cooper returns to the ship with the surviving crew, and they learn that 23 years have passed on Earth, even though they have only spent a few minutes on a planet.
3. Contract
Contact starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. The film is considered one of the most accurate sci-fi films to date. The film tells when Dr. Ellie Arroway is given the task of deciphering a message from the Vega star system. As his work continues, Arroway is confronted by a National Security Agent and a bigot trying to keep the message a secret.
Radio waves are also used to communicate with aliens, which SETI actually does in the real world. When making this film, Robert Zemeckis involved several scientists, so that the film could also be studied by them.
4. Apollo 13
Apollo 13 is a film released in 1995, and is a dramatization of the actual Apollo 13 mission to the moon, which was canceled in 1970 due to an explosion in the spacecraft consuming the aircraft’s oxygen and electricity supplies. Because it is similar to the original story, many viewers even think that this film feels more like a documentary than a film.

While it might not make sense that a teenager with his telescope would spot an Earth-threatening comet before NASA did, there are other elements of Deep Impact that make a lot more sense and are accurate.
Using a nuclear bomb to destroy a comet is never a bad idea, and back in 1998 when Deep Impact first premiered, it was probably the most rational choice to use. There is also a scene in the film where a comet fragment lands in the Atlantic Ocean, causing a mega-tsunami. Such a mega-tsunami may sound improbable, but renowned astophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson confirms that it can happen in the real world.
6. A Space Odyssey
The sixth Sci-Fi film to prove accurate is 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick inspired a number of similar genre films that wanted to display high accuracy. Even though some might say that this movie is boring and slow paced, it portrays everything as accurately as possible. 2001: A Space Odyssey predicted many scientific advances in 1968, long before they actually occurred.
For example, tablet computing, the international space station, and space tourism. The film was also praised for its portrayal of the astronaut as a well-trained and methodical person rather than portraying the astronaut as a “hero”, as has been presented in many other sci-fi films in the past. An astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson even praised the efforts made by the entire crew to make this film very accurate in the real world.
7. Moon
Moon is a film that is quite forgotten by most audiences. Even so, Moon became one of the best sci-fi films ever made. What makes it so scientifically accurate is the ultimate goal of the main character, which is to mine certain resources from the moon. The resource is called helium-3, and in fact the Moon does contain large amounts of it. 8. Her
The sixth Sci-Fi film to prove accurate is Her. Directed by Spike Jonze, Her tells the life of Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, where he is told that he is very lonely after divorcing his wife. Now to overcome his boredom, Theodore bought an operating system equipped with an AI named Samantha. In the end, Theodore felt very attracted to Samantha because she seemed alive, and there was some chemistry between the two. Theodore was finally caught between the virtual world which made him very happy, and the real world which seemed boring to him.
The film proves to be remarkably accurate, as now Apple also has a Siri lookalike like Samantha. In addition there are several aspects of this film that are very accurate, including the small face camera and the earpiece that Theodore uses to communicate with Samantha. In fact, this film does indeed describe what is happening in this world, where humans are more happy with their virtual world.
9. Arrival
Arrival tells the story of when a spaceship from an unknown planet lands in 12 different locations on Earth. That’s why a professor named Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is called to lead the investigation. The crew works against the clock to find a way to communicate with the aliens as national tensions mount. Arrival was praised for being completely accurate in presenting linguistics, which in this context is used to make contact with alien beings.
Although not all aspects of this film are completely accurate, aspects of the language encoding are indeed very accurate. Banks had to study the language in its entirety to properly decrypt the messages from the aliens. Other accuracy includes artificial gravity on the alien ship and the fact that the aliens will live in an atmosphere different from Earth’s.
10. Minority Report
The last Sci-Fi film that proved accurate was Minority Report. This film by Steven Spielberg is set in the year 2054 in Washington DC and Northern Virginia. A special police department called Precrime uses advanced technology to catch criminals before they even commit a crime. Minority Report stars Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton and premiered in 2002. The film was adapted from the 1956 short story of the same name by Phillip K. Dick.
In order to create a future world in 2054, Spielberg had to do a lot of research and consult with various experts to develop a realistic future for Minority Report. Some of the technology used in the film, such as retinal scanners and motion-tracking computer systems that seemed impossible in 2002 when the film first premiered, has become a reality today.
