Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Bite mosquito not only itchy, uncomfortable, and bring many diseases. If this is the case, is there a natural way to get rid of mosquitoes? Don’t be afraid there are mosquito repellent plants.
Believe it or not, there are lots of plants you can grow right in your garden that keep mosquitoes at bay. Many of these plants give off odors or contain oils that mosquitoes don’t like.
You can plant them in the ground or in containers, but place them near entrances and seating areas to increase their effectiveness.
Here are mosquito repellent plants that can be grown at home:
1. Citronella
One of the most famous mosquito repellent plants is citronella. Citronella produces a strong, citrus-like scent that mosquitoes don’t like.
The scent is similar to that used in candles to repel insects. The scented lemongrass plant, which is a type of scented geranium, can be grown in the garden or as a container plant.
2. Lavender
You probably already have lavender growing in your garden—it is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that is loved by many plant lovers. Not only is lavender easy to grow, lavender also makes an oil that is very effective as a mosquito repellant.
“Lavender is a plant that will thrive on dry summers,” says Linda Vater, plant expert for the Southern Living Plant Collection, quoted by Martha Stewart.
“They smell great in the garden and repel mosquitoes, while the purple flowers attract pollinating insects.”
3. Daun mint
Peppermint gives off a refreshing scent that humans like, but mosquitoes don’t. These plants spread quickly, so just one of them can control sufficient numbers of mosquitoes in that season.
“Peppermint has such a strong aroma that it is an effective natural insect repellant,” says Carrie Spoonemore of Park Seed.
4. Basil
Another herb with a pungent smell that mosquitoes don’t like is basil. For a variation with a very strong aroma, try ‘Cinnamon’ Basil.
“Basil leaves can be crushed to give off a scent or made into mosquito spray,” says Spoonemore.
“As a bonus, basil will also repel other pests in the garden.”
5. Marigold
Marigolds are commonly grown in gardens as a way to keep insects and other pests at bay.
“Marigolds are low maintenance plants, but pinching spent flowers can encourage and prolong flowering,” says Spoonemore.
6. Lemongrass
The citronella oil found in citronella is almost as effective as an insect repellant, especially if you crush the leaves and apply it to your skin.
“Citrus is an easy plant to care for and attractive enough to grow simply as a houseplant in a patio or landscape pot,” says Spoonemore.
7. Sage
A perennial perennial that flowers in spring, sage is another aromatic herb that is effective at repelling mosquitoes.
“This long-lived perennial is easy to grow and a mainstay for any garden or container garden,” says Spoonemore.
You can also plant it with vegetables where there is a risk of being damaged by animals, as sage is a great companion plant.
8. Rosemary
The sweet scent of rosemary serves a dual function: it greets pollinators, but is distasteful to mosquitoes.
“Rosemary makes a patio look more beautiful and has an attractive scent with low maintenance,” says Vater of mosquito repellent plants.
