Seema Bonney, emergency room physician and founder of the Philadelphia Center for Anti-Aging & Longevity, says diet has a big impact on general disease risk.
“For example, as many as 30 percent of all cancers are related to poor eating habits,” says Anna Taylor, an outpatient clinical dietitian at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.
Certain foods have been shown to do everything from keeping your gut microbiome diverse to helping you ward off the occasional upper respiratory infection especially important during cold and flu season.
And while no food can directly prevent COVID-19, a cold or the flu, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help your body be better prepared to fight whatever may come.
This immunity is especially important with age. “Our immune response declines with age, so it’s important to consider every meal as an opportunity to nourish your body and support a healthy immune system,” says Bonney.
