While planes raise the prices of their primary and secondary services, budget-savvy travelers can still get a number of extra and free amenities.
And always make sure to read the exact details, or contact customer support to find out about services, gifts and compensation for problems before buying the flight ticket.
Here are 8 free gifts available to economy class passengers, according to what was quoted by “Reader’s Digest” magazine about the former flight attendant, Bobby Laurie:
1. Free checked baggage
Passengers have to pay an additional fee for excess baggage, unless they know the following trick: “Bring your bag to the gate and ask them to check it at the gate. It will go to the baggage claim at the arrival airport, but it will be checked for free. Gate agents are happy to take the bag for free to avoid the boxes being full during boarding and possibly delaying the flight.”
2. Free snacks
“Most airlines still offer free snacks in the main cabin. Whether it’s pretzels, crisps or biscuits, those with an economy ticket on one of the major airlines will get a free snack with their free drink,” Lowry explains, and this applies to several low-cost airlines.
3. Free dinner
Traveling internationally gives the traveler more food benefits than traveling domestically. “The major international airlines still serve hot meals to those in the main cabin,” says Laurie. You may not necessarily get your favorite meal, but you will always get a salad, main course and dessert.
4. Free upgrades
“If you’re a member of an airline’s frequent flyer program and you’re on an economy flight, you can get free flight upgrades,” says Laurie.
This is achieved by flying a lot, so you can be included in the upgrade list for free, or you can spend some of your miles earned for a confirmed free upgrade to first class.
5. Free food during delays
If your flight experiences a delay, the airline will likely feed you for free. “When flights are delayed for reasons within the airline’s control, you are entitled to a voucher even when you are in economy class,” says Laurie.
6. Free changes and cancellations
“With an economy class/main cabin ticket, you can cancel your reservation on most airlines before check-in, and get credit to use for up to a year,” Laurie explains.
But she warns that “basic” economy tickets are usually disqualified, and neither does ultra-low-cost carriers.
7. Free headphones
In the past, speakers were available for a fee, but today “airlines that offer in-seat entertainment usually provide free speakers so you can enjoy the TV entertainment provided,” says Lowry.
8. Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is one of the most valuable free services available to air travelers, and it is also one of the most difficult to find, but it is available on only a few airlines.
Some companies offer free “Wi-Fi” on most of their flights, and others offer a big discount for members.
And if Wi-Fi is necessary for you, check in advance for the service before purchasing the ticket.
