8 Affordable and Effective Tips to Stay Warm at Home Without a Sky-High Energy Bill

It’s cold, so shivering and chattering teeth are the order of the day. But no one wants a high energy bill. Insulating everything quickly is not really an option. Not everyone has a heat pump yet. Eight simple and affordable tips to keep yourself nice and warm at home,

1. Seal cracks

A crack here and a poorly insulated piece of wall there: drafts ensure that the temperature indoors remains terribly low. Painter’s tape is the best quick solution for this. Stick the tape in places where drafts enter. Be sure to take a look at the window frames and window sills. According to energy coach Rob Noordanus from Dongen, windows leak a lot of heat outside and easily let the cold in. Is there a draft coming from under the front door? Roll up a bath towel and place it over the crack.

2. Curtains

Actually very obvious, but open your curtains during the day so that free sunlight can enter. When the sun has set, quickly close your curtains to keep the heat in. If you don’t have traditional curtains, window decoration such as a roller or pleated curtain will also help.

And if you open the windows to air the house, don’t leave them open for too long.

3. Move your easy chair (or couch)

It is comfortable to place your sofa or couch right in front of the heater. But the thing does absorb the heat that would otherwise go into the room.

If you have moved the couch, put an electric blanket over you. You can heat it up considerably in a short time. This also applies to an electric heater. Be careful not to let them consume electricity unnecessarily. According to energy coach Rob, this is about smart heating.

4. Candles

Every little bit helps, candles too. Not only cozy, it also really feels warmer.

5. Radiatorfolie

You can buy a roll at the hardware store for a few euros. The back of your radiator usually only heats the (outside) wall. A lot of heat is lost this way. Special foil behind your radiator reflects the heat so that it goes in the ‘right’ direction,

6. Rug

Nothing is more annoying than cold feet. A rug helps prevent that. At the same time, a carpet, especially if it is deep pile, retains heat.

7. Pitcher

Old-fashioned perhaps, but simply filling a hot water bottle with hot water in bed prevents cold feet. And that sleeps a lot better.

8. Clothing

Wear an extra thick sweater, especially if you sit still to watch television, for example. With extra (self-knitted) socks and you will be able to withstand the cold. “Don’t underestimate the benefits of this,” says the energy coach from Dongen.
