Starting from “small”, showing young people’s new thinking on art
Dance programs and other works are very popular because of their short and flexible performances, rich and diverse content, and close contact with the audience regardless of the size of the venue. According to executive director Huang Jieli, the “Seventh Shanghai Dance Newcomers and New Works Exhibition” attracted more than 80 entries. After layers of selection, 43 short dance programs were launched on the Shanghai stage. The participating works are all new works created by Shanghai Dance Troupe and academies. There is a lot of knowledge behind the short program. One of the important features is to capture the moments of life and find the elements of dance from them. In this performance, the young dancers not only described the vast “vistas” of the world, but also fully displayed the “close-ups” of individual hearts. “Signal” is created through thinking about the transmission of movement information, conveying the life trajectory of support, separation, occurrence, and demise, and metaphorizing the subtle relationship between people; “Dandelion” uses movement to simulate objects, praising the dandelion’s ability to survive even after being swept away by the storm. The tenacious spirit that takes root and sprouts; “Postscript” expresses a life of falling down again and again and moving forward with a heavy burden in the hurried steps. These modern dance works contain the rich imagination of the choreographers for the development of movement and limbs.
It is worth noting that many young creators have broken up and reorganized the materials of ethnic folk dances to depict the life mood of modern people and inject new elements into the stage. “Jing” combines the traditional “fish dance” dance vocabulary of the Dai people with modern dance. The dancers are wrapped and entangled in layers of plastic bubble wrap, turning into the image of a “mermaid” who is tenacious in survival.
