As dance drama creations have become more and more colorful in recent years, professional dance troupes have launched large-scale dance dramas one after another; experts point out that sufficient attention should also be paid to small programs. “Small programs reflect the larger landscape of literary and artistic creation.” Literary critic Fang Jiajun said, “Small programs are an indispensable part of the dance creation chain. Many good works start from a ‘small’ place, and so do many good talents. Rely on ‘small’ works to make a name for yourself.”

Starting from “small”, showing young people’s new thinking on art

Dance programs and other works are very popular because of their short and flexible performances, rich and diverse content, and close contact with the audience regardless of the size of the venue. According to executive director Huang Jieli, the “Seventh Shanghai Dance Newcomers and New Works Exhibition” attracted more than 80 entries. After layers of selection, 43 short dance programs were launched on the Shanghai stage. The participating works are all new works created by Shanghai Dance Troupe and academies. Among them, there are both conservative and innovative works based on the traditional background of Chinese dance, as well as contemporary interpretations with artistic courage; there are both lyrical and graceful Jiangnan scrolls and surging and high-spirited dances. On the stage where youth is surging, poems, songs, literati’s character, classic utensils, etc. have become inspirational materials that creators can easily turn into dance. “Ripples on the Blue Water” draws creative inspiration from my country’s earliest translated poem “Yueren Song”, spreads out reasonable artistic imagination, and uses body movements to describe the sincere emotions in the poems; “Ru Kiln Ode” is based on the image of Ru porcelain in the Song Dynasty. , artistically integrates movements and costumes to express a pure and elegant oriental aesthetic; “If You Want to Fly” newly composes a traditional classical dance vocabulary to express contemporary people’s recollection of the character and integrity of the ancients…Chinese traditional cultural symbols empower dance creation, Attracting audiences of all ages.

There is a lot of knowledge behind the short program. One of the important features is to capture the moments of life and find the elements of dance from them. In this performance, the young dancers not only described the vast “vistas” of the world, but also fully displayed the “close-ups” of individual hearts. “Signal” is created through thinking about the transmission of movement information, conveying the life trajectory of support, separation, occurrence, and demise, and metaphorizing the subtle relationship between people; “Dandelion” uses movement to simulate objects, praising the dandelion’s ability to survive even after being swept away by the storm. The tenacious spirit that takes root and sprouts; “Postscript” expresses a life of falling down again and again and moving forward with a heavy burden in the hurried steps. These modern dance works contain the rich imagination of the choreographers for the development of movement and limbs.

It is worth noting that many young creators have broken up and reorganized the materials of ethnic folk dances to depict the life mood of modern people and inject new elements into the stage. “Jing” combines the traditional “fish dance” dance vocabulary of the Dai people with modern dance. The dancers are wrapped and entangled in layers of plastic bubble wrap, turning into the image of a “mermaid” who is tenacious in survival. While the actress’s upper body simulates the lightness of life, her lower body appears to be wrapped in a heavier and heavier body, allowing the audience to perceive the symbiotic relationship between life and nature in a strong contrast. “Unspeakable” adapts the traditional dance elements of Anhui’s “Flower Drum Lantern”, splits the original stylized movements and forms, and integrates them into modern dance creation, showing the optimism and self-growth of contemporary youth in the face of setbacks. course.

Seeing the big from the “small”, with endless freshness and creative impulse

“On the same stage, you can see Qi Bingxue and Xu Jingkun from the Shanghai Ballet, Fang Wen and Bi Ran from the Shanghai Song and Dance Troupe, and so many ‘rising stars’ from dance schools. It’s so worth it! “Li Yiran, an audience member born in the 2000s, said excitedly. In recent years, “Shanghai Spring” has continued to hold “Shanghai New Dance Artists’ New Works Exhibition” and “Yangtze River Delta Professional Dance Exhibition”, bringing together excellent dance programs and attracting many loyal audiences. Yesterday’s two performances lasted from 2 pm to 10 pm. Some senior dance fans took time off to come and spent most of the day in the theater.

The concentrated performance of 43 programs was very enjoyable, and some viewers found that some of the works on display felt “déjà vu”. In fact, the Shanghai Theater and Arts Troupe and schools have been working hard to incubate new works. For example, the Shanghai Ballet has promoted the “Starting Point” series of modern ballet special performances, and the Shanghai Song and Dance Troupe has created the “Yuanwuji” brand to provide young dancers with opportunities to show their true selves. The “Shanghai New Dance Artists and New Works Exhibition” selects the best from the best, and invites national dance masters to serve as judges, paving the way for the further improvement of new works. “I performed the solo dance “Jing” in the original dance special of ‘Yuanwuji’ in October last year, but I still felt a little regretful and dissatisfied.” Dong Han, a solo dancer from the Shanghai Song and Dance Troupe, told reporters, “This time, the choreographer and I The teacher has polished the work again and presented it to the audience in a brand new manner.”

On the performance stage, the creators also tried to switch between small programs and large works. “The inspiration for many works started out as a small idea, and then gradually developed from a simple dance program.” Wu Husheng, deputy director of the Shanghai Ballet, revealed that the two programs he participated in this time – “Moonlight” and “The Awakening Earth” ” are selected from the original ballet “Light of the Earth”. “In the dance drama, the dance performance and emotional expression are intertwined and progressed layer by layer, with a sense of smoothness. Taking into account the particularity of the performance stage, we have made a new adaptation of the work to make it a few-minute short. The show can quickly arouse the audience’s emotions. In the performance of new talents and new works, I completed the identity transformation from actor to director. This stage always gives me endless freshness and creative impulse.”

“I believe that the stage under our feet is the platform of the future.” Qi Bingxue, principal dancer of the Shanghai Ballet, said. It is a display platform for professional academies and schools to incubate new works and build brands, and to expand and expand innovative achievements at festivals such as Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and China Shanghai International Arts Festival. A series of effective mechanisms for cultivating and discovering talents have spawned high-quality newcomers and new works. Vibrant youth and originality are rushing onto the Shanghai stage.
