767 dead, + 30% in 24 hours

The new coronavirus pandemic has killed 767 people in Spain, increasing by almost 30% in 24 hours, while the number of cases detected exceeds 17,000, according to figures released Thursday by the Ministry of Health.

To date, 1107 patients with the new coronavirus have been declared cured, according to the ministry. The number of cases has increased by 25% since Wednesday, and stands at 17,147, but these numbers could increase significantly as the tests are performed. Spain is to date the fourth most affected country in the world.

The elderly are the most affected. According to partial statistics, 33% of registered patients are over 65 and 18% over 75, said Fernando Simon, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Emergencies.

The director of operations of the national police, José Angel Gonzalez called on the population to respect movement restrictions, and announced that 48 people had been arrested in the past 24 hours for raping them.

Since the alert went into effect on Saturday, the country’s 46 million people can only leave their homes for essential activities: going to work or to the pharmacy and shopping for food.

The borders with France and Portugal are closed in collaboration with these two neighbors, and 996 people were refused entry to Spain, added José Angel Gonzalez. Police are also monitoring social media to combat false information, and “we monitor more than 7000 people“, he added.
