76 people died in Nigeria boating accident | NOW

76 people died in Nigeria after their overloaded boat capsized in the southeastern state of Anambra. This was announced on Sunday by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. 85 passengers were on board during the incident on Friday.

The accident occurred in a region devastated by floods. Since the beginning of the rainy season, several areas of the African country have been flooded. According to the emergency services, more than 300 people were killed and at least 100,000 people were left homeless.

Boating accidents in Nigeria are common due to overloading or poor maintenance of ships. They often sail too fast or skippers don’t adhere to other sailing rules.

“I pray for the peace of the souls of the dead and for the safety of all, as well as for the well-being of the families of the victims of this tragic accident,” said President Buhari.
