The Evangelical Methodist Eben – Ezer – Chapel in Mülheim – Speldorf is currently celebrating its 75th birthday.
However, the associated parish has existed for much longer. Its church in the local Hansastrasse was destroyed by bombing raids in 1944.
Initially housed in the premises of the United Inner Mission, the Methodist congregation received funds from the Evangelical Fellowship in the USA – partly as donations, partly as loans. When a suitable site was found nearby on Ruhrorter Strasse, the new wooden chapel could be built.
The inauguration took place on August 28, 1949 with a celebratory service. That was 14 days after the election to the first Bundestag.
Max Elle was the pastor at that time; for example, he had to look after 100 Sunday school students per year.
Pastors have come and gone – but Ezer has remained to this day, even though it was originally intended as an emergency and makeshift church.
The word “Eben Ezer” means “stone of help”. There are probably 15 other churches throughout Germany that bear this name.
Even though the Methodist congregation has shrunk considerably in recent years, we can wish it all the best for the future.
