Philippe Petit, legendary 74-year-old French trapeze artist, walked last night on a tightrope installed almost 100 feet high inside the Cathedral “St. John the Divine” from Upper Manhattan in New York, passing through a work of art.
Anne Patterson, creator of the aerial art installation, told Pix11 that his palms sweated as he looked at him. “Did you see that there were times when she twisted her ankle and thigh and she had to do a little ballet movement to get it off?” Narrated the artist.
The feat was accomplished by Petit almost 50 years after In August 1974 he walked the tightrope between the Twin Towers in NYC, knocked down by the 9/11 attacks. He was then arrested for that stunt, but the charges were eventually dropped. In 2015 Hollywood recreated it in the movie The Walk, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Last night the trapeze artist traversed a 600-foot cable placed beneath the eaves of the iconic cathedral in Morningside Heights, nearly 100 feet above the ground of the historic cathedralwalking through “The Ribbon Walk,” an art installation made with more than 1,100 colorful 75-foot ribbons hanging from the ceiling.
The feat marked Petit’s third daredevil public performance at the same site: in 1982 he walked on a cable suspended 150 feet above Amsterdam Avenue, to celebrate the long-awaited resumption of construction work in the church, of which he is resident artist, stood out Chronogram.com.
This architectural work begun in 1899 competes with that of Liverpool (England) for the title of being the largest Anglican cathedral in the world? and it is, at the same time, the third largest Christian church on the planet. Tickets to see last night’s show live cost between $25 and 1,000 dollars per person.
