(CercleFinance.com) – Lockheed Martin announces the signing of a 74 million dollar contract for the delivery of an 8th battery of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system on behalf of the Anti-missile Defense Agency ( MDA), an organization affiliated with the United States Department of Defense.
This contract demonstrates “the US government’s continued confidence in the THAAD weapon system and its unique endo and exo-atmospheric defense capability”, said Dan Nimblett, vice president of air and missile defense at Lockheed Martin. Missiles and Fire Control.
According to Lockheed Martin, THAAD is a ‘highly effective and combat-proven’ defense system against short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. “THAAD is the only US system designed to intercept targets outside and inside the atmosphere,” the company adds.
The first THAAD battery entered service in May 2008, while the seventh and latest was in December 2016.
For its part, the 8th unit provided for in this contract should be operational in 2025.
