‘Son Sational’ Son Heung-min (28, Tottenham) won the FIFA Fuskas Award, which is awarded to the player who scored the best goal. This is the first time a Korean player has received this award.
Son Heung-min was called as a Puskas Prize winner at The Best FIFA Football Awards held on the 18th (Korean time). The Puskas Prize is awarded to the player who scored the best goals in the world from November of the previous year to October of the year. This year’s Football Awards were held online in the aftermath of Corona 19.
Son Heung-min said, “The moment I caught the ball, I couldn’t find a way to deal with it, and I started dribbles,” he said. “It was a goal and I was surprised. “During the game, I didn’t know how wonderful it was,” he said. “After watching the video after the game, I knew it was a great goal.”
Son Heung-min sprinted about 70m against Burnley in the English Premier League (EPL) last December and scored’Wonder Goal’, finishing with a right-footed shot after bypassing all defenses. At that time, it was highly praised by foreign media as’The Second Coming of Maradona’. Son Heung-min’s goal was not only selected as the’EPL December Goal’ at the time, but also swept the BBC’s Goal of the Year and the 2019-2020 EPL Goal of the Year.
Earlier, Son Heung-min, who was nominated for the final three of the Puskas Awards, competed with a heel kick from Luis Suarez (Atletico Madrid) wearing a FC Barcelona uniform and an overhead kick from Giorgian de Aracaeta (Flamengo). In this poll result, which was determined by adding 50% of expert votes and 50% of fan votes, she became the owner of the award by winning the most votes. Son Heung-min was the first to receive this award in Korea, and this is the second time in Asia after Mohammed Paiz Subri (Malaysia) in 2016.
Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho was also pleased with the news of Aegee’s Puskas Award. He said, “On the way home, I heard the news of Son Heung-min’s award.”
