709 km radius recorded in Brazil

Nature offers us unthinkable moments! The world has several organisms that study and evaluate certain phenomena. The most recent revelation belongs to World Meteorological Organization which set two new records for lightning.

In Brazil, a radius of more than 700 km in length is already considered the new world record.

Brazil has a new record

The World Meteorological Organization revealed, via Twitter, two new world records for lightning. Lightning is a major risk to many people's lives every year.

Lightning with similar distance from Pontevedra, Spain to Faro

According to the organization, on October 31, 2018, a radius of 709 km (yes, it read well, 709 km), was recorded in Brazil. Taking into account the distance reached, this radius is considered the one with the greatest horizontal distance.

To get an idea, the distance is similar to traveling Boston and Washington DC (or, for example, Pontevedra - Spain to Faro). The previous record was set in 2007, when a 321 km radius was recorded in Oklahoma, in the United States.

In addition to the longest lightning strike, the longest lightning strike was recorded on 03/04/2019. It happened in Argentina and lasted 16.7 seconds. The previously registered brand was 2012, in France, with 7.74 seconds.

These new phenomena were recorded using recent technology, but used the same methodology to measure the extent of the “flash” that had been used in previous records.
