  • Nearly 6,500 health workers and 500 emergency workers have been fired for failing to meet the COVID-19 vaccination deadline. This was announced by the new Greek Minister of Health Thanos Plevris, quoted by the electronic edition of the Kathimerini newspaper, FOCUS reports.

The minister told lawmakers that of the 6,412 health workers removed for non-vaccination, 5,594 work in hospitals and 818 in primary care. Of the 500 dismissed emergency workers, 400 are support staff.

He commented that the fact that 400 health workers received the vaccine on Monday, a few days before the deadline, shows that the government’s decision to make vaccinations mandatory for hospital workers has an effect.

One hospital has received from 35% vaccination among staff to 87%, Pleuris pointed out.

He added that an amendment would be introduced next week to allow health workers who received the first dose of the vaccine to return to work.
