The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs (BMI) is celebrating “70 years of art in building in Germany” with a film and the catalog for the anniversary exhibition.
The film, exhibition and publication were implemented by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs. They give, as it is said, an overview of the art-in-building work of the two German states as well as the reunified Germany and provide insights into selected, mostly not publicly accessible art-in-building projects from Germany and abroad.
BMI State Secretary Anne Katrin Bohle on the federal political goals of art in architecture: “As a Federal Republic we have a special responsibility for the built space. Our buildings should reflect the architectural culture as well as the self-image of our country and our society. As an element of building culture, art in building shapes the quality and expressiveness of our buildings. The values and the buildings complement each other – the art creates identification, attracts attention and thus becomes an integral part of the buildings. “
The film “70 Years of Art in Building in Germany” can be seen on www.bmi.bund.de/kunst-am-bau such as www.bbr.bund.de/70-jahre-kunst-am-bau-in-deutschland. In around 15 minutes he gives a first look at the topic.
In the exhibition and the accompanying publication, art in buildings is presented as an integral part of the building culture of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic and the reunified Germany. In three chronologically structured sections, works from the founding phase of the two German states, from the time of the establishment of state institutions and from the time of the expansion of Berlin as the capital of the unified Germany are shown.
Further subject areas are devoted to the diversity of art in architecture for state institutions in Germany, for diplomatic missions and the military. Furthermore, the procedures for selecting art in building for federal buildings are described and the preservation, maintenance and loss of art in building works are discussed.
The publication “70 Years of Art in Building in Germany” was published by Deutsches Kunstverlag under ISBN 978-3-422-98617-6.
