A 70-year-old woman from Constance was deprived of several thousand euros by fraudsters on Sunday afternoon. As the police headquarters in Konstanz announced, the senior fell for the well-known Whatsapp scam.
She initially received a message from an unknown number. The sender pretended to be a daughter who had dropped her cell phone in the toilet and was now broken.
However, since open payments from an order urgently needed to be settled, the supposed daughter asked the 70-year-old for help. In good faith, the woman then transferred the money to a Swedish bank account that had been sent, and thus directly to the scammers’ account.
Tip from the police: You can also protect yourself from such scams by agreeing on a password with family members. When receiving a message or a call asking for money, it is simply queried – the attempted fraud is exposed.
