A 70-year-old woman from Uganda gave birth to twins yesterday, local media report. This makes her the oldest mother in Africa, reports the hospital where she gave birth.
The woman gave birth to a boy and girl by caesarean section. That happened in the Ugandan capital Kampala. The hospital speaks of “a historic event”. The mother and children are doing well, according to the hospital.
It is unclear whether the woman’s own frozen eggs or eggs from a donor were used for the pregnancy. Most women go through menopause between the ages of 40 and 60, after which they are infertile.
The woman already gave birth to a daughter in 2020. She wanted children because she was ridiculed for being childless, say she told the Uganda Daily Monitor. She also said she wondered who would take care of her when she was older.
