As the police wrote in their report, the crime occurred on Thursday afternoon at Barbarossaplatz after a 70-year-old withdrew a large amount of money from his bank. When the robber fled, attentive witnesses responded in an exemplary manner. They stopped the suspect and held him until the police arrived. The Würzburg criminal investigation department has now taken over the further investigations under the direction of the Würzburg public prosecutor’s office.
The 70-year-old had withdrawn a large amount of cash from his bank and packed it in a cloth bag. This was forcibly torn from him at around 3:15 p.m. at Barbarossaplatz, which easily injured the man’s hand. When the apparently unarmed suspect fled with his prey, the witnesses immediately went into pursuit. They were able to stop him at the beginning of Bahnhofstrasse and hold him down with their combined forces until the first patrol crew arrived.
The accused is a 20-year-old suspect who was already known to the police for drug offenses. The officers of the Würzburg-Stadt police station arrested him for the time being and also seized the stolen cloth bag and cash.

The arrested person remained in police custody until Friday, when he was brought before the investigating judge by order of the Würzburg public prosecutor. This ordered the 20-year-old to be remanded in custody because of the urgent suspicion of robbery. The accused was then taken to a correctional facility.
In their press release, the police and the public prosecutor’s office expressly praise the four witnesses between the ages of 26 and 30 who, through their moral courage, made it possible to arrest the suspect and to secure the loot. “With their exemplary behavior, they made a significant contribution to the fact that the injured party was spared considerable financial damage,” it concludes.
