Safina Namukwaya has been named the oldest person to give birth in Africa. The girl and boy were born by caesarean section at the International Women’s Hospital and Fertility Center in Kampala.
Doctors described the pregnancy as a “medical success” and said Safina and her two babies are doing well.
The pregnancy was quite difficult in addition to her struggle to conceive, which lasted four decades. She first gave birth to a baby girl, Sarah, in 2020, explaining that she was bullied in her community for being childless.
Safina said: “Many people judged and insulted me for being infertile, but I decided to leave everything to Almighty God, who finally answered my prayers.”
After the successful birth of her daughter, she underwent further IVF treatment to give birth to twins, but the pregnancy was not easy. Over the past nine months, the mother of three children has experienced some complications, both with her health and in her personal life.
In a conversation with the NTV channel, Safina stated that she was no longer in a relationship with the father of the newborn babies.
She said: “Men don’t like to hear that you’re going to have more than one child. Even after I was hospitalized, my husband never showed up.”

Safina said she had fought desperately for more than half her life to have a child, and after 40 years of trying, she was forced to turn to IVF treatment. She suffered several miscarriages, lost her husband in the 1990s and was ridiculed for her fertility problems.
The mother said: “One day a very small boy shouted at me, saying that my mother had cursed me to die without a child.”
Fortunately, she now has three healthy heirs.
Although Safina has made history in Africa, she is not the oldest woman to give birth in the world. Erramatti Mangayamma gave birth to twin girls in 2019 at the age of 74 after IVF treatment in India.
