A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 33 months in prison this week for a disturbing incident involving child abduction and assault on a police officer. The case, which unfolded in Lurgan, Northern ireland, has highlighted the devastating impact of such crimes on families and communities.
Marek Burieta, of Spelga Park in Lurgan, appeared before Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday.Judge Patrick Lynch KC handed down the sentence, splitting it evenly between prison time and supervised release.
The court heard that on June 28, 2023, Burieta, while intoxicated, approached a group of children playing in their front yard.He lured a seven-year-old girl away with promises of pizza and ice cream. A quick-thinking neighbor witnessed the incident and intervened, shouting at Burieta to release the child. He complied, but only after lifting the girl into his arms. The neighbor immediately returned the child to her mother and called the authorities.
Upon his arrest, police discovered an 11-inch blade knife in Burieta’s backpack. Further complicating matters, during transport to the police station, Burieta assaulted a female police officer. According to court testimony, he engaged in inappropriate physical contact and made sexually suggestive comments. The details of this assault were described as “vile” by the judge.
Burieta initially denied the abduction charge but later pleaded guilty to child abduction, possession of an offensive weapon, and assaulting a police officer. His defense attorney argued that the abduction was brief and that Burieta had no prior criminal record. However, the judge emphasized the meaningful trauma inflicted upon the child and her family.
“Your actions, whatever you meant by them, has had that affect upon totally innocent individuals,” Judge Lynch stated. He continued, “You have caused harm here and that harm cannot be undone by any action by this court.”
the judge commended the neighbor for her bravery and quick thinking, describing her actions as “public spiritedness in intervening.” The victim’s mother’s impact statement revealed the lasting emotional toll on her daughter and younger child, who now experiences sleep disturbances and fears of being harmed. The mother also expressed feeling unsafe and traumatized, considering relocating her family.
Burieta received a 27-month sentence for the abduction and weapon charges, with an additional six-month consecutive sentence for the assault on the police officer. The court ordered the destruction of the confiscated knife.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of child safety and the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable members of our communities. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed and the lasting impact on the victims.
