Empty Iron Stores
In case of suspicion, it is worth determining the iron storage protein ferritin in the blood. This is especially true for people who eat a vegetarian diet, for women after childbirth, before and after menopause. The ferritin very reliably reflects the total body iron. A low ferritin concentration in the blood always proves an iron deficiency. Conversely, an apparently normal ferritin does not rule out an iron deficiency in every case.
