7 out of 10 severe trauma patients suffer from severe disabilities… More than half die

[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter Shin Do-kyung = Seven out of 10 severe trauma patients suffer from severe or moderate disabilities.

On the 27th, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced that it would hold the ‘National Damage Investigation and Surveillance System 20th Anniversary International Symposium’ at CJ Hall, Seoul National University Children’s Hospital, Yeongeon-dong, Jongno-gu, to review the progress of the damage investigation and surveillance project over the past 20 years and discuss future development plans.

At this international symposium, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced the results of a community-based severe trauma survey that occurred in 2022 and 2023. The community-based severe trauma investigation system was introduced in 2019 and promoted the creation of time series statistics from 2015 to 2023.

As a result of the survey, the disability rate of severe trauma patients increased from 64.1% in 2015 to 77.4% in 2023. The disability rate refers to the proportion of surviving patients who are in a vegetative state, severely disabled, or moderately disabled, as assessed by the Glasgow Outcome Scale at the time of discharge.

The severe disability rate also increased from 31.6% in 2015 to 36.3% in 2023. The severe disability rate refers to the proportion of surviving patients who are in a vegetative state and severely disabled, as assessed by the Glasgow Outcome Scale at the time of discharge.

On the other hand, the fatality rate of severe trauma patients decreased from 65.5% in 2015 to 52.5% in 2023. The fatality rate is the proportion of patients with severe trauma who die.

In particular, this international symposium is the first to be held since the enactment of the ‘Damage Prevention and Management Act’. The future implementation system, including the background to the enactment of the law, establishment of a comprehensive damage management plan, and establishment of central and regional damage control centers, will also be disclosed.

Kevin Mackey, director of the Sacramento Fire Department, presents the current status of damage and emergency response systems in the United States. Phillip Coule, a professor at Augusta Medical School in Georgia, explains the current status of multiple casualties in the United States and the response system.

In addition, presentations will be made on the direction of establishing a comprehensive damage management plan and ways to apply domestic damage prevention management through comparison of domestic and foreign damage monitoring systems. Experts discuss the connection and use of investigation, surveillance and prevention projects, such as damage prevention and management using damage investigation results and community damage prevention based on the damage investigation and surveillance system.

Director Ji Young-mi of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, “In order to establish a damage prevention and management strategy, scientific basis must first be prepared through a national damage investigation and surveillance project.” He added, “We will upgrade the national damage investigation and surveillance system to understand the damage status and risk factors in detail, and customize it.” “We will discover preventive management projects,” he emphasized.
