Morocco came into the spotlight after his national team froze Spanish at World Cup 2022 on Thursday (8/12).
The Moroccan team beat the Spanish team with a score of 3-0. Morocco became the fourth African country to advance to the quarter-finals and will face Cristiano Ronaldo and his companions in the Portuguese national team.
Here are some facts about the country of Morocco.
1. Called the Maghreb Country
Morocco is a North African country known as the Maghreb country. It is called the Maghreb because Morocco is an Islamic region in North Africa outside of Egypt that borders the Mediterranean Sea.
Magribi itself means ‘west’ in Arabic. The term originates from the time of the great expansion of Islam.
2. 99 percent of the population is Sunni Muslim
More than 99 percent of the population in Morocco is Sunni Muslim, according to a 2021 US government report. Less than 0.1 percent of the population is Shia Muslim.
Meanwhile, less than 1 percent of Morocco’s 36.4 million total population are Christians, Jews and Baha’is.
3. The world’s largest exporter of sardines
Morocco is the largest exporter of canned sardines in the world, according to a report by Morocco World News.
The country exports 90 percent of its sardines to 100 countries.
As of 2021, Morocco’s Ministry of Fisheries said their canned sardines account for 53% of total seafood exports worldwide.
