Dr. Hani Aref, Head of the Department of Neurosciences and Supervisor of the Stroke Program at Ain Shams University Hospitals, said that what is meant by stroke is the sudden injury to the nerve cells of the brain, as a result of a circulatory disorder, which may appear in two forms, the first to take the form of bleeding, The other is a blockage in an artery that results in a blood cutoff, and thus causes sudden damage to the brain, which is what is called a “brain stroke”.
And he added: “There are 7 factors, if we adhere to them, there will be very high rates of prevention of strokes, and they may reach 70%, which is, maintaining the level of sugar for diabetics, and the need for regular analysis, and if there is a patient with pressure, the pressure must be balanced, and not exceed 140, but if there is an obese patient, he must lose weight, and the need to refrain from smoking, and that The rate of body fat should be low according to certain standards, and the food should be healthy, in addition to exercising regularly.
Aref added, in his interview with the media, Lubna Assal, on the “Al-Hayat Al-Youm” program broadcast on Al-Hayat channel, that there are 3 main symptoms of a “brain stroke”, which is that a distortion occurs in the mouth, heaviness in the hand, or slurred speech, and in this In the case, one must go to the nearest place quickly to treat the stroke, and the time should not exceed 4 and a half hours, which is the time concerned with the ability to dissolve the clot, and the time may extend up to 6 hours, and here intervention is done with a cerebral catheter to remove the clot.
Dr. Hani Aref explained: “The earlier the treatment, the better it will be, and if the patient arrives in the first hour, it will be much better than the third hour, so the medical service varies from one hospital to another and from one country to another according to the time factor, and there are certain substances and certain drugs that dissolve The stroke in the first hours, until the patient is fully recovered from it.
And he continued: “Stroke is the second cause of death and the first cause of disability in Egypt, and we have 250,000 patients who suffer strokes annually in Egypt, and a third of these patients die and the second third live with permanent disability, and it is unfortunate that strokes have increased in Egypt.”
Aref stated: “The factors that contribute to the formation of clots have not been treated, and the person is not committed to treating this matter, and we discovered that 40% of stroke patients discover that they have atrial fibrillation when they come to the hospital, which is a disorder that occurs in the heartbeat as a result of various diseases in the heart.” the heart”.
