Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
This year commemorates World Lung Day or Day Lungs The world is celebrated with the theme ‘Care for Your Lungs’. Caring also pays attention to lung health not only because they are currently vulnerable to the Covid-19 situation. Caring for your lungs means that you protect them from attacks by other respiratory diseases and maintain overall body health.
Agus Dwi Susanto, Head of the Association of Lung Doctors (PDPI) said the lungs are the only organs in the body that interact directly with the external environment. He also gave several ways to maintain lung health.
1. Say no to tobacco
Consumption of tobacco products including cigarettes has been shown to increase the risk of various lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Agus emphasized that both conventional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes pose a risk of lung problems.
Many consider electronic cigarettes to have less health risks than conventional cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes, vapes also contain nicotine like conventional cigarettes.
“Nicotine inhaled from electronic cigarettes damages lung tissue and lowers the body’s resistance to infection and cancer. Emissions from vaping devices are harmful to the lungs,” Agus explained at the World Lung Day press conference, Friday (24/9).
2. Avoid cigarette smoke from the environment
Even if you are not an active smoker, there is still a risk of lung problems if you are exposed to environmental cigarette smoke. When you are in the same environment or location as an active smoker, you become a passive smoker. CDC says you will be exposed secondhand smoke which is a combination of smoke coming out of a burned cigarette and smoke from the mouth of an active smoker.
There is no data that confirms the comparison of health risks between passive and active smokers. But there are a number of bad effects secondhand smoke on health, among others, heart disease, lung cancer and stroke.
Agus advised not to allow smoking activities to be carried out inside the house, avoid public areas that allow people to smoke, then choose a smoke-free hotel room to avoid cigarette smoke residue (tertiary cigarette smoke).
