Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Everyone certainly wants to avoid contracting the disease in order to maintain a healthy body. Nevertheless, there are a number of deadliest disease in the world that can be experienced if you do not pay full attention to health.
according to Healthline, some of the world’s deadliest diseases are actually partially preventable.
The following are the deadliest diseases in the world, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019.
1. Ischemic heart disease or coronary artery disease
The deadliest disease in the world is coronary artery disease (CAD) or ischemic heart disease.
CAD occurs when the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart become narrowed. Untreated CAD can lead to chest pain, heart failure, and arrhythmias.
You can prevent CAD with medication and by maintaining good heart health. Some steps you can take to reduce your risk include:
– exercise regularly
– maintain a healthy weight
– Eat a balanced diet that is low in sodium and high in fruits and vegetables
– avoid smoking
– Drink only in moderate amounts
2. Stroke
A stroke occurs when an artery in your brain becomes blocked or leaks. This causes oxygen-starved brain cells to start dying within minutes.
During a stroke, you suddenly feel numb and confused or have trouble walking and seeing. If left untreated, a stroke can lead to long-term disability.
People who receive treatment within 3 hours of having a stroke are less likely to experience disability. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 93 percent of people know sudden numbness on one side is a symptom of a stroke.
However, only 38 percent were aware of all the symptoms that would prompt them to seek emergency care.
Stroke prevention methods may include controlling high blood pressure with medication or surgery.
You should also maintain a healthy lifestyle, complete with regular exercise and a healthy diet that is low in sodium. Avoid smoking, and drink only in moderation, as these activities increase the risk of stroke.
3. Respiratory tract infections
A respiratory infection is an infection of your airways and lungs. It can be caused by influenza, flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, and tuberculosis.
Viruses usually cause lower respiratory tract infections. They can also be caused by bacteria. Cough is the main symptom of lower respiratory tract infection.
You may also feel shortness of breath, wheezing, and tightness in your chest. Untreated lower respiratory tract infections can lead to respiratory failure and death.
One of the best preventive measures you can take against lower respiratory tract infections is to get the flu vaccine every year.
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water to avoid infectious bacteria, especially before touching your face and before eating.
Stay home and rest until you feel better if you have a respiratory infection, as rest promotes healing.
4. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term progressive lung disease that makes breathing difficult.
Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are types of COPD. In 2004, approximately 64 million people worldwide were living with COPD.
There is no cure for COPD, but its progression can be slowed with medication. The best way to prevent COPD is to quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke and other lung irritants.
