Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Some time ago, the government Turki announced his country changed its name from “Turkey” to “Turkiye.”
According to the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoganthe word “Turkiye” is the phrase that best describes the country’s culture, community and values.
Not only Turkey, several countries have also changed their names. The following countries have decided to change their designations:
1. Netherlands
Citing DW, the Dutch government changed their name from Holland to Netherlands in 2020.
The name change was carried out to change the image of the Netherlands as a country that uses drugs for recreation and legal prostitution.
2. North Macedonia
In 2019, the Republic of Macedonia changed their name to the Republic of North Macedonia. The name change was made for political reasons.
North Macedonia seeks to improve its relations with Greece. However, Greece does not agree with the use of the name Macedonia as a country, considering that the name is also the name of a region in Greece.
In addition, Macedonia itself is a term for the Greek kingdom in the past.
Greece had proposed North Macedonia to use the name Republic of Vandar or Republic of Skopje.
After going through a lengthy negotiation process, the name North Macedonia was then agreed upon.
3. Eswatini
In April 2018, King Mswati III changed the name of Swaziland to Eswatini. The name change was carried out as an effort by the government to escape the shadow of the country’s colonialism in the past.
The king was also said to be unhappy when the word Swaziland somewhat confused people, considering it to be Switzerland.
