The active population of Romania is 8.18 million people, of which 7.68 million are employed, another 496,000 people are unemployed (mostly men), according to census data published by the National Institute of Statistics.
The inactive population comprises 10.8 million people, of which pensioners and social workers account for two-fifths (39.5%) and pupils and students almost a third (32.0%).
