A strong earthquake shook central Japan today, Monday, as a result of which warnings of tsunami waves were issued in the center of the country and on the west coast, according to what the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency said that the earthquake that struck Japan had a magnitude of 7.4, noting that the magnitude of earthquakes in some areas of Japan reached 7 degrees.
The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation said it expects tsunami waves up to 3 meters high to occur in coastal areas along the Sea of Japan.
She added that the tsunami waves are believed to have reached the coast of Niigata and Toyama Prefectures, Sado Island and the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture.
The Japanese Traffic Authority said that major highways near the epicenter of the Japanese earthquake were closed.
This came after the first tsunami waves reached Japan after a series of strong earthquakes that shook the center of the country.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that waves reaching a height of 1.2 meters hit the port of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture at 07:21 GMT.

Government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said, “It has been confirmed that there are no malfunctions at the Shika Nuclear Power Plant (in Ishikawa) and other plants so far.”
For his part, the Japanese Prime Minister called on residents of some areas to evacuate immediately following a strong earthquake, and he issued instructions to the government to do everything in its power to ensure the preservation of citizens’ lives.
