6th Bremen Film Festival: More than 250 films over five days – Culture in Bremen: Current news

The 6th Bremen Film Festival will take place from April 14th to 18th – due to corona for viewers in digital format. Original plans of the organizers to enable at least a few events with an audience on site had to be discarded due to the pandemic.

The program nevertheless remains extensive. The festival organizers promise a total of more than 250 films, including 29 world and 74 German premieres, all of which can be streamed online during the film festival. The festival kicks off on Wednesday, April 14th, with the short film competition “Klappe!” The participants – professionals as well as laypeople – had a total of 48 hours to submit a maximum three-minute contribution on the topic of “Bloom Time”. From April 11th it can be voted online who should receive the two audience prizes of 500 and 1000 euros. In addition, a jury prize endowed with 1000 euros and an honorable mention with 500 euros in prize money will be awarded. The moderators Franziska Kirchner and Fabian Nolte will present the teams and their films in a live stream on Wednesday from 6 p.m., after which the prizes will be awarded.

In addition to the short film competition, awards are given in several categories: humor / satire, innovation, music and Bremen. In the international humor / satire competition, endowed with 3500 euros, over 70 feature-length and short films from a total of 26 countries compete against each other. In the area of ​​innovation, the Bremische Landesmedienanstalt awards 1000 euros each for particularly innovative narrative and visual implementations. The Bremen category includes films that were either made with Bremen’s participation or shot in the city.

In addition, this year there is a new focus on the program with the focus on literature. The best film in this category receives a prize of 500 euros from the Senator for Culture. As part of this focus, the event “Super-8 meets Literature” will also take place on April 17th, which combines analog film with poetry and prose as well as live music and will be streamed from 8 p.m.

A highlight of the film festival is the presentation of the Bremen Film Prize, which will take place on April 15 with a few guests in the Bremen Theater and will be broadcast live from 8 p.m. This year’s award winner is Hape Kerkeling. He is honored for his humorous and comedic oeuvre with a total of 5,000 euros and the “Golden Pug” trophy – a homage to Loriot. This year’s film program is supplemented by various panels and film discussions, which can also be accessed via stream.
